I’m a “frequent small meals” person. I find that if I don’t eat every few hours I turn into a monster, totally crash, and lose all focus. Does this picture speak to anyone else? Ha!
I usually eat at least a substantial snack or meal 5-6 times per day, which means I pack a LOT of food each day to take with me to work, gym, and everywhere else – and I always have food in my purse. Open my purse at any point and you’ll find cut-up veggies, crackers, bananas, bags of homemade trail mix, and nut and fruit bars galore (here a few examples). I try to make sure that my snacks have protein, healthy fat, and carbs to provide energy and vibrancy, but also satisfy – oh, and if I can add chocolate, I will!
These are all portable, simple, and quick — you’ll find these in my lunch bag! For more ideas, check out this post, and please share your small meals/snacks, too, as I’m always looking for inspiration!
Fresh veggies, homemade sweet potato slices, & plantain chips/crackers with hummus
I wash and chop veggies and roast vegetable chips (like these sweet potato chips) at the beginning of the week – during my Sunday food prep – so they’re ready to be devoured!
Non-dairy yogurt, cocoa/cacao powder, sweetener to taste, a dollop of nut butter and/or jam (I like Trader Joe’s organic fruit-sweetened jam for less sugar), berries, dried fruit, hemp/chia/flax seed, and cacao nibs for crunch
This is easily customizable, so use whatever you have on hand. I start by mixing non-dairy yogurt with cacao or cocoa powder, add a few drops stevia (or your favorite sweetener), a pinch of salt, and a pinch of cinnamon. This gives you a creamy chocolate base to add whatever fixins your heart desires.
My current faves are 1) baby kale, cucumber, frozen banana, frozen pineapple, chia seeds, unsweetened coconut milk and 2) mixed greens, grapefruit, frozen orange, frozen pineapple, frozen banana, mint, and coconut water. To make your smoothies portable, stick them in glass jars (re-use your old nut butter/jam jars) to take with you.
